I remember a post by Tom, saying that he was considering opening up a new video's section for newgrounds, though it's terribly controversial :|
Film has always had a lot of exposure on sites across the net, even before Youtube. Flast artists take it very personally when Newgrounds, the one true place for non-game animators to express themselves online, is asked to expand into other fields that would would demolish its uniqueness.
Yes, but I can also see indie films helping Newgrounds. There isnt any need to shocase them on the website persay, but Newgrounds sponsers shorts. Why doesn't newgrounds extend that and try to sponser filmmakers whether it be a short film, animated short, feature film, or animation. Small flash games get 5000 or something that gives them a reason to make more. Why not help filmmakers who finish their projects but happen to go overboard on their budget with 5000. That's something i think will really propel Newgrounds over other sites. Youtube was nearly on the road to sponsering films, but they failed in that attempt. And, sponsering indie films that are viewed in the film circuit could only help Newgrounds rather than demolish its uniqueness.
I agree 100% with almost everything you said. However, NG is far from professional. This site is still mostly about individuals creating Flashes in their spare time, and for most of them, that's how it will always be. It's true that over the years, a few lucky people have had their success on here land them jobs in animation or prorgramming, but for the most part, these are side projects, worked on for maybe a few hours a day. I don't want NG to become filled with professional-quality films created by teams of animators-- I much prefer it as a showcase of more unpolished, personal work.
Yeah, I love the way it is already as well. But what I'm considering is that Newgrounds merely helps the independent filmmaker. i'm not talkign about another youtube. This is about real filmmakers that make movies to go on to sundance and other festivals, but we never get any distribution deals and all of are hard work goes to waste. Where do we turn. Lets say if i finished my film, went to sundance and came back with nada. What I'm thinking is if Newgrounds showcased my film and sponsered it. I get a fanbase of over a million. Perhaps I even have another sponser that gives me 1 dollar for everyone that signs up to their website if the follow a certain link. Then, this fanbase will allow me to get the media to the consumer quicker. I can hire a distribution team to but it in theaters. It has Newgrounds as a sponser on the film and might even have a viewing of another million. See what I mean. I'm just thinking on a whole new level
The economic benefit to both independent filmmakers and Newgrounds as a whole appears sound. My suggestion is to try to get in contact with Tom and try to convince him that there is a very good opportunity in it. I feel like it would be very interesting to see what might come out of this idea though I personally fear that Newgrounds might not work out because at its very nature, Newgrounds is not a serious site. Though it tries sometimes to be, many of the people on Newgrounds would never accept it.
We can only hope during the months that newgrounds slowly accepts change no matter what form it comes in. I only can send a spark towards change by speaking my mind. I'll definitely try to contact Tom tomorrow morning
I think that's a great idea. Almost nobody knows about Newgrounds and it woul help so many people make their dreams of filmmaking and animation, and make film and animation a more open job option. One thing though, If we help make films that sponser NG, and the films can be seen by kids, kids could learn about NG. It wouldn't be so safe to have a MATURE button on the front page (and every page for that matter). Right?
Hmm, I see what you mean, but the problem is kids are already viewing inappropriate material anyways. It is the parents job to monitor what their kids do on the internet by setting up blocks and etc. Plus, I doubt many kids watch indie films like Rocket Science, Four Eyed Monster, or Abel Raises Cain. Newground tries to keep it legite by having ratings and put the responsibility in the kid's hands. But we all know they watch metal gear awesome or other stuff even with Mature.
I think a better idea would be to get together a good torrent site for sharing all these indie films, and put together an origional site of it's own. Advertising on NG might be a good call though.
Are you still going to release your Pico Day flash?
accually on eggbeater i woul have givin you a ten but that shaker or eggbeater? sound was a little ampped an i had headphones on. other than that shit was good. keep it up.-clum z
Its Quite Disgusting How SO MANY People (on a Massive Scale Here) Dont Know Whta Newgrounds is! it makes me angry because ALOT of the Flash Animations People see are Originally from Newgrounds...This site Deserves ALOT More Then it has got...
Cheers
I'm kinda with ansel on this one... Anyways newgrounds itself wouldn't even be that functional in distributing independent movies simply because they don't have the viralness of flash games, even flash movies that are featured don't often take off (beyond a few rare exceptions). The whole problem with the online market is that people expect things for free, they generally aren't willing to spend their money for something they feel entitled too, therefore it'd be hard to even break even as add impressions really run below 50cents per thousand impressions.
Keep on trucking though you have a bright future (if you ever want a few scenes animated I'd be willing XD always fun to be part of a bigger project. )
