KartuneHustla

Why don't we Newgrounders make a film?

Posted by KartuneHustla Dec. 22, 2008 @ 6:55 PM EST

For the poeple with short attention spans that don't feel like reading this. I will quickly summarize what I'm trying to say. Obviously people aren't reading the thread entirely. (Clears his throat). I am not trying to do anything at the moment involving a animated film. I am just expressing what it would take to do something like it and hopes for there being a collaboration to do an animated film. No the film doesnt have to be 100 mins long. That's just a maximum. For the people who think I just want people to do work for me, that is not the case. I would definitely put my time in animating a part of the project if it were to happen. This is just a case of What IF. Nothing is official. No of course there is no story to even make an animated film for the person who wanted to know. I explain that you would of course need writers and even then, people will tend to not want to animate other peoples stories. Yes it would be hard, yes you would need a story (duh), yes i understand all the problems that will arise

I had this thought on my mind all the time... why don't I make a movie. I always wanted to make a film. My goal in life before I die is to create a film one day. I don't care if it sucks or stands the test of time. As long as I finish it, then that would make me happy. So, I look at all the artist on Newgrounds and ask myself, why don't we all collaborate on a movie. Making a quality animation for me takes about a month for every 2 minutes of animation. Now, I don't mind making a short animation for a film festival. Actually, later in 2009 I plan on making a submission for film festivals so I can get a head start on my independent career. I seriously want to be an independent animator, so in order to do it I have to take the steps to become exactly that. But anyways, let me get to the point I was trying to make

There are a ton of incredible artist, writers, and voice actors all around Newgrounds. If I made a list right here and now, it would take me the entire day. Basically, there is a lot of talent. If we could group all of these people together, we could definitely come up with a movie in a period of about a year. If it takes me a month to do 2 minutes of animation, then think of what 50 or more animators could do in a year. I think if there was a collaboration to create a movie on Newgrounds, it would help people understand the process that goes into making an animated movie. It would be an incredible journey and a great learning experience. Who hasn't ever wanted to make or be a part of a movie?

Anyways, I've been trying to gather ways to go about doing this so it would actually be a feasible goal. Usually, animated movies never exceed 100 minutes. As an animator and a student, I would probably never have the time to complete an animated film at that length. It would take me years, if not a decade of working on the animation. I would love to put the time into something like that, but doing everything by myself can be a hassle.

If you handed each animator maybe like 2 to 4 minutes over a period of about 7 months, they will come out with some beautifully done line animation. Then when the months have ended, you can compile all the work, and come out with an animation that can turn into a movie. It sounds easy when I type it, but then I run into the problem of people who have trouble working with someone's style of drawing that may drastically differ from there's. If there is in fact gonna be a collaboration such as this, we would have to all convert to one style of animation to keep things similar. That's the only way it can be done, unless the project was gonna be like the Animatrix, but generally the artwork has to be exactly the same. So we would need concept artist to come up with the style. If you are gonna work on these types of animation, then you have to learn to change styles in order to make a more fluid animation. Usually 3d animations already have the character models set up for use and all the animators have to do is put them in poses. However, for 2d each animator has to learn to be able to animate what they are given for concept art.

Anyways, If we could get really great animators to join in making a colaborative movie one day, that would just be astounding. Maybe next year after I finish my projects, I'll start to make this collaboration. Or maybe, someone else will come along and make it themselves.

Everytime I think of making a collaborative movie, I always think about the script and the story. Its hard to get people to commit to one story and one story only. Sometimes, people may not agree and want to add something so they can animate the way their own scenes. The only way to make sure that it is fair is if no animators partake in writing the script. It would have to be the script writers that help writing. It would be good though to have everyone, writers, artist and actors to add things they would like to see in the story however before any writing is ever done. It would be great if there was already a script made and we had artist come in who read the script and want to join because they love the story. Those would probably be the best ways. It would be cool though to get writers into it as well.

Background artist and concept artist will have to do the same thing the animators do and come up with one style to go with. The backgrounds have to go from background to background just as well as the animation.

I think in the long run, for this to happen, we definitely have to appoint a director, someone who can manage the entire project. I wouldn't mind doing it myself, but I doubt anyone wants to listen to me direct them. It would have to be an admin, or someone people respect more. It would be pretty cool if Tom Fulp orchestrated the whole thing, or even Mindchamber or Johnny Utah for that matter. If it had to me, I would definitely put in the time to make it happen, I just doubt people would want to join me anyways :). Put hey, I will be glad to orchestrate something like this whenever I get the chance next year.

So yeah, a movie made by the people, for the people would be an excellent collaboration. I would love to see some newground artist come together and make something for film festivals or even movie theaters. You never know. If you guys would be interested in that sort of thing, let me know. I will try my best to put together something solid so people can join. There would be alot of documents for me to write up so everybody knows what they are doing and etc, but I think that this collaboration, if it were to at least be attempted, would be a great experience. Even if it is never finished, it was still atleast attempted and thats all that matters. It would be good if it was finished and complete though :).

Well, thats all I have to say on the matter. I think my love for animated films makes me want to accomplish something like this one day. I was watching Iron Giant for the 200th time yesterday and Paprika (by the way, if you have never watched this movie, get off your ass and watch it because the animation is surreal), and everytime I watch movies like these, I keep asking myself... when will I make something like this. Well, hopefully a collaboration can happen. Well, to end this post, here are my top 5 2d animated movies for you guys to check out:
Iron Giant
Paprika
Akira
Lilo & Stitch (made me cry)
Lion King

I wish that American Studios still made animated films, but what can you do?

That would be cool, but also extremely difficult and compiling it all will be a bitch, but hey I am fully supportive of this and Why isn't Mulan on this top list of 2 animated movies?

thats on my top ten, but I love animes alot for some reason. Their stories break the norm

It takes a month for you to animate one minute of animation, and it would take a day to write down names? You are really behind. Get the lead out, man.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 7:11 PM KartuneHustla responds:

well when I say that, I mean to make something thats pure quality. I would fill out all the frames in a 25 fps animation, then it would take me a month. Making everything smoth :). Actually 2 minutes of animation equal about 3 weeks if im on redbull. I forgot to exclude the fact that I'm not making any backgrounds and whatnot.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 7:18 PM FatKidWitAJetPak says:

Your thinking too big man. Sure that sounds great and all.. but do you know how hard it is to get 100+ people to work on a film OVER THE INTERNET? That has never been done before and the only way it could happen is if you could fins 100 plus people to work on it. :|

If you need voice acting, you have found one at least. You will also need a writer... a lot of writers. :o

Dec. 22, 2008 | 7:28 PM KartuneHustla responds:

hahah again, I explain it will be hard, and i explain you will need a large number of people This is just a what if. Do you ever read my journals at all :)

I heard of it, but never seen it. I remember a few years ago, I heard it circulating through the festivals, but never got the chance. I'll definitely give it a watch this week

Dec. 22, 2008 | 7:42 PM Tystarr says:

If a teen from Philly could make the biggest flash portal on the web bringing artists from all around the world there is no reason why your idea is impossible.

I believe this could work, it will take a lot of time and problems will arise but we together can make the next biggest movie ever. Or at least biggest indie flick.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:19 PM KartuneHustla responds:

true man, very true. Tom is badass. Gotta love him

Dec. 22, 2008 | 7:43 PM Mr-No-Name says:

I would love to do something like this, It'd be fun.

Far as voices go, I have a new mic I'd like to try out. Gimme some lines or something maybe I'll manage to get into your next animation thingo :3

Dec. 22, 2008 | 8:02 PM KartuneHustla responds:

Well nothing is happening now. It will take a good while for this to even start... even if it starts. There are alot of things that need to be done so.... yeah. But since you are a voice actor, i'll have projects i'll be doing later, so if i ever need a voice actor, then i'll give you a holler :)

I DEMAND TO BE ON BOARD THIS PROJECT IF IT DOES HAPPEN

im no animator, but i love to write and help plan things. I have great ideas that can enterpet into a good movie. I just havent been able to get anything on ng cuz of lack of animating skillz (WHICH I WILL BE CHANGING SOON) BUT PLZ, SIGN ME UP

Dec. 22, 2008 | 7:51 PM KartuneHustla responds:

cool man. Yeah, if this were to happen, it would be great for everyone because even if you are not an artist, you can still help by giving ideas, or helping with writing, or whatever

Dec. 22, 2008 | 8:14 PM Dazmi says:

People still animate movies, although those animated movies don't seem to be all that popular or well-known...

There's nothing wrong with thinking big!
Sure, there hasn't been 100+ or 1000+ people making a collab before but that doesn't mean it still can't be done!!

Dec. 22, 2008 | 8:19 PM KartuneHustla responds:

well i mean, in America, there aren't too many 2d animated movies any more. There are so few. The most I see are foreign. Oh shit, I should have listed Persepolis... dammit i love that movie

Dec. 22, 2008 | 8:23 PM Yuggoth says:

If you need a writer; count me in. If you got a group of people to sit down and compile their ideas, then sent to you, compiled and voted on, i'm sure you could get the whole project done in the end. All it takes is one step, then another. You've managed one step in the direction, so, plant another foot and keep walking.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:21 PM KartuneHustla responds:

well if this ever starts then yeah, it would be great if you joined. Step by step, day by day

Dec. 22, 2008 | 8:51 PM LyricalRabbit says:

That's a great idea!
But what about an actual movie in video-format!?
Members of NG could get a few mates together, and after we choose the genre/plot of the film, they can record themselves and send it to us.
Then we put it all together and make a movie! All done online! :D

Dec. 22, 2008 | 9:36 PM KartuneHustla responds:

that could work too, but for newgrounds there are mainly artist so I decided to do something for artist. This could be applied to making a videogame like castle crashers as well. It would probably more realistic to do that then make a movie. Who knows. A video game collaboration would be badass too.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 8:56 PM ColdReaver says:

That sounds like a awesome idea. Like what everyone else said, it would be a difficult feat to accomplish, but if you ever decide to do it, I'd gladly lend some animation skill to the table.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 9:39 PM KartuneHustla responds:

sweet man

Dec. 22, 2008 | 9:06 PM supyohos123 says:

Watch the new Disney animated movie have a crappy story. I have extreme low expectations about how Disney wants to appeal to the audience these days. It's mostly an audience of Jonas brothers and Hilary Duff fans anyway.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 9:30 PM KartuneHustla responds:

hahahah true

Dec. 22, 2008 | 9:31 PM ToasterDemon says:

Ive been thinking this idea for ages, but since most of my submissions are games rather than animations, I havent said anything about it. This needs to be done whether its one normal film, or something like "Fear(s) of the dark"

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:09 PM KartuneHustla responds:

I think a project like this has to be made. Either a movie or a collaborative video. This would definitely be the step in the right direction as far as the future of independent animation.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 9:36 PM Zwickel says:

If you want to really do this we would need some forums for it, and I-m sooo in on the animation side.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:06 PM KartuneHustla responds:

Fuck yeah. I think a forum would be perfect. I think the whole project together would need its own website for that matter, or if newgrounds could facilitate the project, that would be great too

Dec. 22, 2008 | 9:45 PM NoneZop says:

well if it had really stupid shit like uhhh newgrounds did I think itd be stupid
yeah i know what the fuck im talking about

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:18 PM KartuneHustla responds:

hahaha well, its not gonna be like stupid comedy. Im talking about making a film that's actually good, like paprika or spirited away or iron giant, or something to that extent

Dec. 22, 2008 | 9:46 PM Helloworld00 says:

I've made some amateur real-life movies, about a few minutes in length, nothing spectacular, and I think I could help you with this. I was thinking that each animator do a different part of the movie, not a different section. I know, sounds weird and complicated, so let me explain.

You could have each animator do a different object in the movie, such as one person doing the foreground, one doing the character(s), one for the various objects the character(s) interact with, etc.

I will try to help you in any way possible. If I have any other bright ideas, I'll send you a PM. But, since this place will zip off the front-page news in no time flat, I'll be better able to reply to you if you send me a PM that I can just reply to then. You can put a reply on here, just PM me the reply also please. TY!

-Helloworld00-

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:15 PM KartuneHustla responds:

thanks. The idea of objects would be too complex. What i was thinking was each animator do a different scene. In animation, I would seperate it as backgrounds and animation. Foreground is basically just part of background art. Usually when I animate i already animate the object with the character. Its just easy like that. Thanks for wanting to help. I want be doing much yet for this. I might not even be putting this together. Im just trying to find out who would be interested in something like this that's all

Dec. 22, 2008 | 9:55 PM ToasterDemon says:

just another note, I agree that the person in charge should be Tom or someone similar.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 9:59 PM slavetothekeyboard says:

That would be awesome. I would take no part in it because I do nothing at the moment, but tons of people would. What about music? I don't do anything musical, but others might, and be okay with it being in the film.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:23 PM KartuneHustla responds:

Yeah, I talked about it a little in my post, but yeah, music would definitely be need. LIke I said, everyones talents would go into this. There is alot of things that would have to be done to make this work

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:30 PM PiGPEN says:

Sorta sounds like you just want other people to work for you.
Amateurs like to make things for themselves so they would not have time for you....i suggest you get crackin' on a big bag of money.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:00 PM KartuneHustla responds:

hahahahahahah! If I had years to make a movie by myself then I would. But I thought it would be cool to have other animators get the chance to help make something because the fact is it would be a time savor. I would be animating in this too of course. I would also like to direct, but first i want to see if anyone is interested before I put the time in to plan everything out

PS: Hopefully you were joking. I do animate hahahahahhahaha

Updated: Dec. 22, 2008, 11:00 PM

Dec. 22, 2008 | 10:53 PM Existance says:

That sounds awesome and really well thought out. I think it's your idea, that your have the write to direct, I'd have no problems taking orders from you. I hope I can start making a name for myself so I can have a chance at participating in this.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:02 PM KartuneHustla responds:

wow thanks man. Well hopefully people dont mind listening to me :). It would be cool if i could orchestrate it. I wouldn't mind making it happen

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:06 PM Necro-Lancer says:

That's a great idea, but fifty artists have already collaborated on one thing before. Think bigger. I wouldn't mind voice acting. I'm not the best, but I can quite a lot of voices. Also, what's with the picture of Paprika?

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:15 PM KartuneHustla responds:

I put the picture because I love that movie. But about the fifty artist, I think its enough. You really don't need more than that. Its a project that will be a year in the making, so I mean, animators have plenty of time to contribute. More would be fine, but yeah, fifty is a good amount to start with.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:08 PM MysticShinHanKu says:

Maybe you could do a film in chapters that would be released on newgrounds every once and a while. Not exactly a series, but chapters of a full storyline. And then you could allow slight differences in artistic style. While it still has to be top notch, it could differ for each chapter. Just an idea.

Good luck, it'd be sweet if you could manage something like this.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:19 PM KartuneHustla responds:

well depending on the story, things may work out to be this way, but the problem with releasing it in chapters would be co authoring. So many people would be a part of it, that it wouldn't be fair because co authoring people would mean that I would have to exclude others. The idea of this is to make an animated movie. A real one where the characters maintain their styles. If the story makes it needed to have people change styles during production, then we could do it that way. But because so many artist would be a part of it, it wouldn't make since to have it change constantly. But I like the idea

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:21 PM NightBreaker says:

it's a good idea...
a really good idea...
hmm
have you put anything on the flash forum or anything, to see what responses you would get?

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:46 PM KartuneHustla responds:

Well, I'm not trying to make it happen right now. I want to make a bullet proof plan and write out every detail before I start trying to make this happen. But I think the responses would be the same here. No one works for free... this will be hard... I'm in...etc

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:21 PM Radioactive24 says:

Eh. I was never a fan of Iron Giant, since the 3D wasn't meshed very well (even if it was "frontline"), but I agree with Akira and Paprika. If you liked those, I'd say check out Interstella 5555 : The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem.

It's an hour long music video for Daft Punk's cd, Discovery. But it's all anime and it's amazing.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:48 PM KartuneHustla responds:

thanks man, ill defintely check it out. Now i will watch this and Mind Game

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:32 PM InuBlade360 says:

Incredibly interesting and tempting idea....wonder if Tom would take any interest in this.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:50 PM KartuneHustla responds:

you never know. Maybe I'll see a post from him tomorrow in the morning

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:33 PM AlmightyHans says:

Me and happy harry have been trying to get something together. it's harder than you think, because people on NG work for free and they don't like making a small part of a big thing. which is completely understandable. But i'm working on a script as we speak.

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:45 PM KartuneHustla responds:

Actually I was just talking to tomamoto and he mentioned you were doing something like this. Iknow it will be tough, trust me. I have been trying to come up with a solid way of doing this for a bout a month and still nothing comes to mind. Contact me on aim or pm me so I can hear what you guys are coming up with. Partnering up with you and happy will probably help this happen. The more the better

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:38 PM Seckan says:

Nice idea, maybe a little bit difficult, but nice anyways...
I would join, but I dont know nothing about animation

Good luck with your project

Dec. 22, 2008 | 11:54 PM pvt-blasto says:

the trouble is, what movie? thats why we havent done it yet, i have tons of ideas for movies, everyone does, the trick is finding one that everyone wants to work on....

if you say... wanted to remake the babaar movie, hey thats great im sure there are fans, but not enough, and not every talented person on newgrounds would want to work on it.. if you say... just wanted everyone to submit 2-4 minutes of whatever then thats what we're already doing...

for instance, i could tell you right now, i have a fantastic idea for a new series, called the chronicles of Boxman, involving time/space travel, sword fighting with god, and robot-pirate-aliens i would love nothing better then to have a little support, maybe a background artist or VOICE ACTORS!

but thats dream may not come to fruition, im going to have to do the whole thing myself... im buying a 1k tablet just to do just that...

so... its a good idea... but maybe a tad ambuishious

Dec. 23, 2008 | 12:05 AM KartuneHustla responds:

hahah no one reads these post man lol. I already explain the need of a script and a concrete story. what you just wrote was a repeat of ideas i just expressed

PS: Good luck on making your film with that 1k tablet without any help from anyone

SUPER PS: I don't think anyone would take the time out to make a animated fan film. That's just a retarded example. There would be no point in making one. You would run into legal problems and spending a year on an animated fan flick would just be a time waster. What the fuck is babaar anyways? Hey, lets make a Sonic film pvt :D. Or how about Awesome the Movie :D

Dec. 23, 2008 | 1:27 AM TheBoogley says:

You've got people pretty exited here methinks. It's a great idea, but one that would require incredibly careful planning and direction to see through. One way around the whole "drawing style thing" is to go really industry with the process.

Character model sheets and mood boards.

I'd prefer strict storyboards to a script, only allow people who can draw the story to be a part of it's creation. In my opinion writers often don't think visually which leads to sloppy dramatisation.

Two or three levels of animator; the lead animator, and two levels of inbetweener.

I've only run three collaborative projects on this site and I've got to say it's hard work but very rewarding when you see everyone's work come together into one film. One issue that always comes up is people not making or completing their parts, which in the Morphing Orgasm led to a hell of a lot of extra work for me to do.

Dec. 23, 2008 | 1:55 AM KartuneHustla responds:

dang, you summed it up perfectly. Thanks man. Well, i dont know what will happen with this. Only time will tell. It would be cool if this happened, but who knows

Dec. 23, 2008 | 3:30 AM animehound says:

I love your idea and spirit to even think of attempting such a feat. Im all for it, and to be honest the art of 2d animating is pretty much on its way out, but some of the best movies ive ever seen were 2d, i loved Lilo and Stitch, The Iron Giant, The Secret Of NIMH, and Titan A.E. I would so support you in this work any way that i can, ive always wanted to do voice acting, and ive been in small films myself (granted they were school projects, but one was considered to be aired by PBS, but one of the kids didnt want to be shown on TV the wuss) any who, anything that i could do to help in such an event would be an honor.

: But I thought it would be cool to have other animators get the chance to help make something because the fact is it would be a time savor. I would be animating in this too of course. I would also like to direct, but first i want to see if anyone is interested before I put the time in to plan everything out

See there's the issue....the whole point of being an amateur animator is being able to make an animation from conception. Sounds like you want all the fun while everyone else acts as your "time savor".

: PS: Hopefully you were joking. I do animate hahahahahhahaha

I never said you didnt....still i want joking.

: hahahahahahah! If I had years to make a movie by myself then I would.

Unless you have a terminal illness you DO have years to make a movie. Remember that.

this still makes no sense. I would be doing most of all the animation. I would be putting more time than anyone else even if this were to happen. (Again, this is just a what if. If anything, this would just be a cool collaboration.

I don't have time in my life to set aside everything to make a full length movie. Again, it would take me years and I wouldn't be able to continue school or my job if this were to happen. I know what an amateur is, im not trying to do everything by my self for something like this. It isn't practical with me being a student at all. This wouldn't just be my project, this is everyones. I would just be helping put the pieces together

Why do u keep bringing up amateur? I never once said thats what im trying to be

I disagree with Shirt I enjoy animating other characters as long as their construction is simple, if this ever happened I'd love to do some of the character animation.
